Tang Chi Couture’s Dark Romance Takes Center Stage at New York Fashion Week

For Maggie Fan, these are the emotional foundations of Tang Chi Couture’s latest collection.

On September 11, 2026, the New York-based couture label made its New York Fashion Week debut at The Georgia Room, presenting its Spring/Summer 2027 collection, “In Between…”. The 25-look runway marked the brand’s first solo show in New York, following its formal runway debut during London Fashion Week in September 2025.

For Fan, a Taiwan-born designer who developed her creative language in New York, the occasion was deeply personal. This was the city where her design identity took shape.

Beauty at the Edge of Darkness

Following the previous collection’s exploration of time, “In Between…” turns its attention toward life, love, and eventually, death.

The collection considers the distance between darkness and light, beauty and decay, devotion and danger. At its heart is the idea of loving until death, sacrificing oneself for something cherished, or being drawn toward something dangerous, like a moth to a flame.

“I wanted to look at what exists within it—life, love, and eventually, death,” Fan explains. “It’s darker and more romantic than my previous work.”

The result is a world of quiet violence and deadly romance, where beauty is never entirely innocent.

A Palette of Memory and Decay

The visual language of “In Between…” draws from flowers in decay and beauty preserved just before it disappears.

Bone, parchment, dusty blush, bruised mauve, dried burgundy, antique ochre, earthy brown, deep charcoal, and stark black and white create a palette that feels both aged and immediate.

Silk duchess satin, taffeta, chiffon, and velvet form the foundation, while hand-worked beading, feathers, felting, handmade flowers, and resin 3D elements bring texture to the silhouettes.

Flowers gifted to Fan by her other half were allowed to dry and wither, their curved forms inspiring custom floral prints. A dotted velvet motif draws from the intricate patterns of moth wings.

The result is a textile language rooted in intimacy and transformation.

When a Love Letter Becomes a Threat

Among the collection’s most striking ideas is the transformation of romance into something unsettling.

One dramatic gown features a black bird and handwritten red notes, turning a love letter into a death threat. The concept continues into the footwear, where a shoe steps onto a threatening love letter.

Elsewhere, hand-felted birds adorn dramatic gowns, introducing a sense of fragility and mourning. A pair of fully hand-felted sculptural twin looks explores the opposing forces of light and darkness.

Together, these pieces express the emotional duality of “In Between…”—where something can be beautiful and haunting, delicate and heavy, all at once.

Couture Craftsmanship, Reimagined

Felting remains one of Tang Chi Couture’s signature techniques, expanded this season across couture pieces, hand-felted birds, and ready-to-wear designs.

New techniques include laser cutting, handcrafted flowers, feather embellishment, custom textile development, and expanded resin 3D modeling.

The 25 looks span couture, made-to-order, and ready-to-wear, reflecting an evolving house opening its world to a broader audience.

The season also introduces Tang Chi Couture’s first ready-to-wear footwear line, translating the brand’s conceptual approach into more wearable designs.

A New Chapter in New York

While “In Between…” preserves the meticulous craftsmanship and darkly romantic identity of Tang Chi Couture, it also represents a shift toward greater accessibility.

Fan has evolved the collection to include more wearable pieces while retaining the techniques and emotional depth that define her work.

For its New York debut, the designer created an immersive runway experience designed to feel like stepping into another world—dark, mysterious, emotional, and slightly surreal.

Theatrical pacing, music, lighting, movement, and atmosphere extended the narrative beyond the clothing, allowing beauty, mortality, and desire to be experienced rather than simply observed.

With its first solo New York Fashion Week runway, Tang Chi Couture enters a new chapter—bringing Maggie Fan’s darkly romantic aesthetic and meticulous craftsmanship to a wider audience.
