YOKE Spring/Summer 2027 Reimagines Reality Through the Art of Dépaysement
Japanese label YOKE unveiled its Spring/Summer 2027 collection with a thoughtful exploration of perception, materiality, and transformation. Drawing inspiration from pioneering Surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim and her concept of Dépaysement—the act of removing familiar objects from their expected context—the collection challenges conventional ideas of texture, gender, and functionality through exceptional craftsmanship.
At the heart of the collection lies a simple yet provocative question: What happens when an object becomes something else? Rather than relying on dramatic silhouettes, YOKE achieves this transformation through fabric innovation. Traditional Autumn/Winter materials such as fur, leather, wool, and long-pile textiles are unexpectedly introduced into a Spring/Summer wardrobe, creating visual and tactile contradictions that redefine seasonal dressing.
Japanese artisans play a central role in bringing these ideas to life. Leather is embossed and dyed to convincingly resemble denim, while lightweight cupro is combined with flock printing to mimic the appearance of corduroy without sacrificing fluidity. Knitwear blends finely cut cupro with kid mohair, creating garments that balance the crisp character of traditional Japanese washi with unexpected warmth. Throughout the collection, what the eye perceives and what the hand experiences are intentionally at odds, reinforcing the collection’s surrealist foundation.
YOKE also continues its evolution toward a more fluid approach to design. Introduced last season, the womenswear line increasingly merges with the menswear offering, dissolving traditional gender boundaries in favor of a unified wardrobe. Inspired by Oppenheim’s belief that “the spirit has no gender,” the collection embraces androgyny while allowing materials and craftsmanship to become the primary language of expression.
Accessories further extend the theme of transformation through a series of collaborations. Partnerships with Tokyo-based design studio Pøsitum, Spanish leather specialist HEREU, along with returning collaborators TSUCHIYA KABAN, foot the coacher, Marbot, and REPRODUCTION OF FOUND introduce bags, sandals, footwear, and leather goods that blur the line between fashion and functional design.
One of the collection’s most poetic details arrives in the form of a folding fan printed with a fur motif, housed inside a faux-fur case. Inspired directly by Oppenheim’s iconic Object (Le Déjeuner en fourrure), the pairing unites two opposing ideas—warmth and cooling—into a single accessory, encapsulating YOKE’s vision of Dépaysement through a subtle yet memorable gesture.
For Spring/Summer 2027, YOKE demonstrates that innovation doesn’t always require spectacle. Instead, the collection quietly transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, proving that the future of fashion may lie not in creating something entirely new, but in teaching us to see the familiar differently.
